Chinese tech giant CATL has just achieved zero carbon footprint at its second power battery factory in China.
CATL announced on Friday that its Zhaoqing factory in Guangdong province officially received the PAS 2060 Carbon Neutrality certification from SGS on August 11. The certification signifies the company’s C02 neutrality attainment since 2022.
In hindsight, CATL set its carbon neutral strategy on April 18 as it seeks to advance as the first major battery company to eliminate CO2 emissions. It announced targets of achieving carbon neutrality at its primary factories by 2025 and the value chain by 2035.
Zhaoqing factory
CATL currently operates a total of thirteen factories. The Zhaoqing factory marks its first carbon-neutral production base for energy storage batteries.
However, it is only CATL’s second fully-owned factory to secure SGS certification, which hit volume production in May last year.
CATL claims that the Zhaoqing factory effectively eliminates C02 emissions through the following approaches:
- switching energy mix
- distributed photovoltaic power generation
- use of green energy
- carbon offsets
In addition, the world’s largest battery maker also strives to cut its energy usage from production operations. It monitors and controls equipment activation to avoid unnecessary utilization.
Yibin factory
CATL’s Yibin factory is its first-ever carbon-neutral battery factory, which was established on March 24.
It is apparently the first production base of its kind globally.
“The Yibin plant is just the starting point, and we will leverage the lighthouse plant to achieve carbon neutrality across our global bases.”

CATL continues to dominate the power battery industry with 112.0 GWh capacity in the first six months of the year. It currently has a market share of 36.8%, SNE Research’s August 3 data revealed.
CATL’s achievement of carbon neutrality for its second production base in China is indeed remarkable. It demonstrates the company’s determination to promote clean energy consumption.
