Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has just launched the new 2025 Dolphin with an improved driving range for the same prices as the prior model year.
BYD launches 2025 Dolphin with four variants
According to CnEVPost, BYD introduced the new 2025 Dolphin compact electric hatchback with notable upgrades.
The 2025 BYD Dolphin also comes with four variants as its predecessor. As mentioned, the prices remained the same despite the upgrades.
The base prices of the 2025 BYD Dolphin variants are as follows: RMB 99,800 ($13,730), RMB 112,800, RMB 119,800, and RMB 129,800.
Notably, BYD has just launched the Dolphin Glory Edition on February 23, 2024. It unveiled the 2025 model year in just less than six months after the latest update.
Exterior
The BYD Dolphin EV was the first model to ride on the brand’s e-Platform 3.0. It was also the first EV model to join the Ocean portfolio.
It slightly looks like the Honda Fit, offering multiple body paint options for younger customers.
The updated BYD Dolphin EV is still 4,125 mm long, 1,770 mm wide, and 1,570 mm tall. It also maintained its wheelbase of 2,700 mm.
Performance upgrade
The new 2025 BYD Dolphin comes with a larger battery pack for the entry-level and highest-priced variants, enabling them to deliver a longer driving range.
The new Dolphin’s three lower-priced variants feature the BYD Blade battery with a 44.928 kWh capacity, delivering a CLTC-rated driving range of 420 kilometers. Meanwhile, the top-tier variant offers a larger battery pack with a 60.48 kWh capacity. This considered, it delivers a more extended driving range of up to 520 km.
For reference, the prior Dolphin Glory Edition’s four variants feature 32.256 kWh, 44.928 kWh, 44.928 kWh, 44.928 kWh, and 44.928 kWh battery packs. They deliver CLTC-rated driving ranges of 302 km, 420 km, 420 km, and 401 km, respectively.
In addition, the updated Dolphin EV’s three lower-priced variants feature the same powertrain as the Dolphin Glory Edition. Their electric motors yield a maximum output of 70 kW and a peak torque of 180 Nm. They can accelerate from 0-50 kilometers per hour in just 3.9 seconds.
On the other hand, the highest-priced variant offers a more powerful electric motor that yields a maximum power of 150 kW and torque of 310 Nm. It accelerates faster than the three other variants at 3.5 seconds.
BYD’s swift model update for the Dolphin electric hatchback demonstrates the advantages of having a vertical integration of the supply chain. In 2023, the Dolphin became one of the brand’s most popular electric vehicle offerings. It sold over 30,000 units in most months at the time.
However, its sales waned so far this year. Therefore, the arrival of the updated Dolphin EV will undoubtedly aid the company in reviving the strong sales of the budget-friendly model.
