Highlights
  • BYD's unprecedented November sales reach 301,378 plug-in electric vehicles, marking a 31% year-on-year increase.
  • Significant growth in battery-electric vehicles, with a 49% surge in sales.
  • BYD's strategic focus on all-electric vehicles evident in recent sales patterns.
  • Amidst stiff competition, BYD sets ambitious target of 3 million plug-in car sales for the year.

Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD reported record-breaking sales of 301,378 plug-in electric cars globally in November 2023, up 31% year-on-year. Notably, this sales figure incorporates the company’s sub-brands, including Denza (11,843), Fang Cheng Bao (626), and Yangwang (408).

However, it must also be noted that BYD’s November performance was relatively close to its October sales of 301,095 units, indicating a slowing growth rate.

Monthly sales (Nov 2023)

BYD’s battery-electric vehicle sales surged by 49% to a record of 170,150 units. However, plug-in hybrids failed to beat its peak sales in September. Nonetheless, it still recorded a 13% sales increase to 131,228.

Notably, BYD’s commercial EV sales recorded 525 units last month. Overall, the automaker’s plug-in vehicle sales totaled 301,903 units.

BYD exported some 30,629 plug-ins last month, recording another new monthly high. The remaining figures were sold in the domestic market.

Update on November BEV sales: BYD continues to assert dominance in the lower-priced segment of the market, outperforming higher-priced competitors whose EV lineups are facing challenges.

YTD sales (Jan-Nov 2023)

Meanwhile, here are BYD’s passenger plug-in car sales from January to November 2023:

PHEVs 1,288,660up 56%
Total 2,672,728up 65%

In retrospect, BYD’s sales of plug-in vehicles topped 1.85 million units in FY 2022. It boosted the brand’s cumulative sales to over 6 million units, InsideEVs emphasized.

The Song family continues to lead BYD’s NEV sales with 61,694 units, with plug-in hybrid models gaining increased popularity.

The BYD Seagull EV maintained its position as the brand’s second top-selling model, with sales of 44,603 units. The Qin family followed with 42,440 sales, while the all-electric BYD Yuan family sold 42,323 units.

BYD’s Dolphin sold a total of 35,246 units, while other models remained at the bottom of the brand’s lineup with sales of under 20,000 units.

BYD’s YoY growth rate continues to decline so far this year. It has even hit its lowest point since mid-2020 (COVID-19 lockdowns). It implies that China’s industry leader must strive to boost its sales to defend its leading position against strong rivals like Tesla.

Nonetheless, we can observe in the brand’s November performance that it is increasingly prioritizing the all-electric vehicle market, as BEVs account for the largest portion of its overall volume.

BYD aims to hit 3 million plug-in car sales this year. To achieve this target, the company must sell more than 300,000 NEVs in the last month of the year.
