BYD’s new Thai factory
According to BYD Global’s X post, the new local electric vehicle production plant in Thailand has an annual production capacity of 150,000 units.
The launch of the new Thai factory is part of BYD’s efforts to expand its footprint in Southeast Asia and Asia Pacific.
BYD founder and CEO Wang Chuanfu offered a speech at the opening ceremony, which featured three of the brand’s popular EVs in the country: the BYD Atto 3 SUV, the Dolphin hatchback, and the Seal sedan.
In hindsight, BYD kicked off the construction of the Thai factory in 2022. It formally launched the factory just below 2 years after that announcement.
The plant is expected to create more than 10,000 job opportunities in the region.
BYD poised for continued expansion
BYOD has undoubtedly emerged as one of the fastest-growing automakers in the world. In 2023, it sold more than 3 million electric vehicles.
The Chinese automaker continues to boost its production capacity at its existing production factories while establishing new facilities internationally.
BYD has achieved initial success in Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy, with NEV sales reaching 12,942 units from January to May 2024. It accounted for about 40% of the country’s thriving EV industry, Autolife Thailand’s data revealed.
In Australia, BYD has also enjoyed significant growth since it delivered its inaugural Atto 3 model in August 2022. It has sold more than 25,000 EVs in the Australian market so far, with the original Atto 3 leading the charge.
