The mileage driven by new energy vehicles (NEVs) reportedly recorded a month-on-month increase of 5.99% to 17.1 billion kilometers in China in January, according to the latest data from National Big Data Alliance for New Energy Vehicles (NDANEV).
Of that total, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for a whopping 86.47%. Meanwhile, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) accounted for 13.48%. Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) contributed a modest 0.06%, significantly trailing behind the other NEV category in the world’s largest auto market.
Notably, China’s top 10 automakers accounted for 46.58% to 7.974 billion kilometers of the 17.1 billion kilometers total. Chinese EV and power battery giant BYD contributed a significant 9.21% of the overall NEV miles driven to 1.577 billion kilometers, compared to its rivals.
NEV registrations in China as of 2022
China reported registrations of 13.1 million NEVs as of 2022. That figure represents 4.1% of 319 million total, per Traffic Administration Bureau of the Ministry of Public Security of China’s data published on January 11.
Notably, BEVs accounted for 79.78% to 10.45 million units of the NEVs’ 13.1 million total.
Retail sales – 2022
Overall, NEV retail sales reported a YoY growth of 90% to 5.67 million units in China, according to China Passenger Car Association’s (CPCA) latest data.
For context, BEVs reported retail sales of 4.24 million units in 2022, while PHEVs had 1.42 million units.

The NDANEV data revealed 2,297,700 PHEVs had been connected to the NBDANEV system as of 2022, representing 19.03% of all NEVs. The report noted that PHEVs had a total growth rate of 184.2% for the past three years.
Meanwhile, private passenger NEVs accounted for 84.36% of the total.
