Chinese automaker XPeng is reportedly aiming to own its battery development process based on the company’s agenda, as per CnEVPost.
XPeng’s Senior Director of battery technology background
The Guangdong-based electric vehicle maker has hired Zhong Liang, a veteran BMW senior battery engineer, to lead the project. Notably, Zhong is currently XPeng’s senior director of battery technology for over six months, according to 36kr.
Before working for BMW, Zhong was employed by the South Korean battery business SK Innovation.
Battery R&D team
Approximately 100 employees currently work on the battery R&D team at XPeng. On the other hand, the automaker already maintains frequent contact with upstream raw material suppliers.
Additionally, XPeng has established a company whose range of operations includes battery production. Notably, Guangzhou Pengbo Automotive Technology Co Ltd might be a step toward creating its batteries in the future.
In five years, XPeng reportedly aims to have its batteries in electric vehicles.
XPeng’s clarification about the report
However, Cailian reported XPeng’s statement that the company does not intend to have its battery development and production after the release of 36kr’s report.
To be clear, the auto industry is currently the center of XPeng’s business strategy. That said, the automaker is focused on reducing expenses and enhancing operational efficiency in its electric vehicle business.
Furthermore, XPeng also clarified that Zhong has worked with XPeng for a considerable amount of time and has long coordinated with battery producers.
