XPeng, a developing electric vehicle manufacturer, unveiled its newly developed ultra-fast charging technology that will add 200kms of range in 5 minutes on its 8th anniversary in China.

The New S4 ultra-fast charger is an 800-volt class electric vehicle charger with a maximum power output of 480 kW at up to 670 A and over 700 V.

A video presentation released by Xpeng demonstrated an example of a charging session of its XPeng G9 model, the first car to use most of the potential features of the New S4 ultra-fast charger.

The session initially began at over 150 kW (at over 640 V).

The charging power increased within about one minute, reaching over 400 kW. After three and a half minutes, the power reached a level of almost 440 kW (at roughly 700 V). According to the video, the car charged from a very low state-of-charge (SOC) to approximately 40% SOC in just 5 minutes, recharging about 210 km (131 miles) of the CLTC range.

"With supercharging, users will no longer experience range anxiety, changing the entire electric mobility landscape. XPENG's supercharging offering, comprised of EVs, battery technology, and charging stations, will really pick up momentum between 2023 and 2025." – Xiaopeng He pic.twitter.com/Suffy6Awsd

Comparatively, the existing V3 Tesla Superchargers provide 150 km of range in 5 minutes at a rate of 631 A/250 kW, while the Porsche Taycan charges up to 270 kW. The results depicted from the example charging session showed positive results for the Chinese GB/T charging connector, which is presumably the highest commercially available in China.

“Today, we unveiled our 1000th charging station at the Sunac Mall in Guangzhou. XPENG’s charging network now covers 337 cities in China.” Xiaopeng He, the Chairman & CEO of XPeng Motors, stated in a Twitter post.

The 1,000th charging point of XPeng at Sunac Mall in Guangzhou, China, is also the first to have the Xpeng S4 charger installed. The charging performance could significantly improve with the latest 800 V electric models with huge battery packs, making BEV recharging long-distance travel more comparable to refilling a conventional car.
