Chinese startup XPeng reported a significant sales decline of 60% to 5,218 units in January 2023, marking its fifth month in a row of a YoY sales drop. Now, the company finally launched the all-new G9 SUV and P7 sedan on February 3 as it aims to improve sales in the coming months.
As per the press release, XPeng will exhibit both models at eCar Expo in Stockholm from February 3 to 5. It has also started accepting reservations in Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, and Sweden.
“XPENG G9 and P7 bring a combination of superior styling, quality, performance and comfort, exemplifying our market-leading technology and innovation. Today also represents a significant milestone as we build our presence in Europe. We believe both vehicles deliver a new level of sophistication and a people-first mobility experience, and will be the electric vehicles of choice for many European customers,.”
XPeng Vice Chair and President, Brian Gu
Notably, XPeng expects to start P7 deliveries in June, while the G9 deliveries will begin in September.
XPeng vs. Tesla
It is not a secret that the Chinese smart EV startup seeks to compete with the world’s most valuable automaker Tesla. However, it still has a long way to go to near Tesla’s success in the auto industry.
Now, XPeng seeks to expand its business to foreign markets amid its five consecutive months of YoY sales drop in January 2023. Reports suggest that Tesla’s significant price cuts primarily affected XPeng’s sales last month.
For reference, XPeng priced its P7 sedan at 49,990 euros ($54,917), a significant difference from Tesla’s Model 3 Long Range price of 52,990 euros. Notably, the Chinese automaker markets the electric sedan with a 576 kilometers range, while Tesla’s Model 3 Long Range claims to have a 602 kilometers range on a single charge.
Model | Range | Price |
XPeng P7 sedan | 576 kilometers | 49,990 euros ($54,917) |
Tesla Model 3 Long Range | 602 kilometers | 52,990 euros |
On the other hand, XPeng’s G9 SUV is more expensive than Tesla’s Model Y Long Range, with prices of 57,990 euros and 53,990 euros, respectively. As for the range, XPeng’s G9 SUV supposedly has a range of 570 kilometers, while the Tesla EV has a range of 533 kilometers on a single charge.
Model | Range | Price |
XPeng G9 SUV | 570 kilometers | 57,990 euros |
Tesla Model Y Long Range | 533 kilometers | 53,990 euros |
All that said, XPeng’s European expansion will undoubtedly be challenged by established automakers, not only Tesla but also Chinese and European companies like Volkswagen.
Nevertheless, Xpeng has stepped up its international marketing efforts since opening physical storefronts in Europe and introducing the P5 sedan to the general public last year.
