Xiaomi Unveils SU7 Ultra prototype

Aspiring Tesla rival Xiaomi introduced the full-carbon Xiaomi SU7 Ultra prototype during Xiaomi founder Lei Jun’s 2024 Annual Speech on Friday.

The hyper-sports version of its SU7 electric sedan seeks to advance as the fastest 4-door car in the world, gas or electric.

Design

The SU7 Ultra prototype features notable design dissimilarities from the standard SU7. It comes with an enormous carbon fiber rear wing that yields up to 2,145 kg of downforce.

Xiaomi modified the rest of the car’s design elements to improve its aerodynamic structure. For instance, it added two giant front vents and enlarged front-splitter and side skirts.

It has 5260/2064/1406 mm dimensions and a 3000m wheelbase. While it has the same wheelbase as the standard variant, the Ultra is still larger owing to its performance body kit.

Power and performance

Xiaomi’s SU7 Ultra will be the first model to use the newly announced HyperEngine V8s. For context, it delivers a 27,200 rpm top speed, 578 max horsepower, and 635 Nm peak torque. These considered, the HyperEngine V8s is currently Xiaomi’s most powerful motor.

The prototype comes with three Xiaomi-developed electric motors, including two V8s and one V6s motor. These motors yield a maximum output of 1548 horsepower, beating even the highest-end sports cars like the 1,479 hp Bugatti Chiron.

The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra features CATL’s racing-dedicated Qilin 2.0 high-power battery, enabling a maximum output of 1330 kW. Impressively, this battery technology can discharge 880 kW even at a 20% State of Charge. It can also support 897V charging and a 5.2C charge rate, enabling it to replenish in just sub-12 minutes.

In addition, it features AP Racing high-performance brake calipers for improved braking capabilities. It comes with front and rear six-piston forged fixed calipers and racing brake pads that can withstand 800+ degrees of working temperatures. It also has a motor reverse for brake energy recovery, delivering a max 0.6G braking force recuperation.

The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra boasts an acceleration time of 1.97 seconds in 0 to 100 km/h and a top speed of up to 350 km/h.

The new SU7 Ultra model is Xiaomi’s latest attempt to set a new record in the four-door electric sedan class at Nürburgring. The Volkswagen ID.R is currently the fastest electric car on the German race track, with a lap time of just 6:05.336 minutes. Meanwhile, the  Porsche Taycan Turbo GT is currently the fastest four-door electric car, with a lap time of 7:07.55 minutes. Xiaomi seeks to break the lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife track in October.

Xiaomi has not yet disclosed the SU7 Ultra’s official price. However, the electric sedan’s three variants (Standard, Pro, and Max) cost $29,700, $33,832, and $41,261, correspondingly.
