Battery recycling giant Ecobat announced on February 20 the development of Casa Grande – its first li-ion battery recycling facility in North America and also its third facility worldwide.
For context, Ecobat is a global company with a major presence in Europe, southern Africa, and the US. The company owns a collection truck fleet, 65,000 battery collection stations, three lithium-focused sites, 12 secondary smelting facilities, and a main smelting plant.
With this recent project, Ecobat is set to make another significant mark in the battery recycling industry.
“We are thrilled to grow our global lithium-ion battery recycling footprint with a new facility in Casa Grande, Arizona.
This facility, like our lithium-ion battery recycling facilities in Germany and the United Kingdom, represents a significant milestone in Ecobat’s strategy to grow our lithium-ion battery recycling business to a scale similar to our world-leading lead battery recycling business.”
Marcus Randolph, Ecobat CEO
About the Ecobat Casa Grande
Ecobat targets an initial annual capacity of approximately 10,000 tons at the new plant in Arizona. However, it will gradually increase to fulfill the rapidly growing demand for EV batteries as the world moves towards sustainable mobility.
The Ecobat Casa Grande is developed to recycle li-ion batteries through the following process:
- Diagnostics
- Sorting
- Shredding
- Material separation
The company can generate a concentrated black mass with critical materials by following the abovementioned steps.
As for the schedule, Ecobat targets Q3 2023 to open the Casa Grande.
Amazingly, 70 million EV batteries were fully recycled by Ecobat in 2021. Now, with the new plant, we can expect the company to significantly break this record in the coming years.
“With this state-of-the-art facility, Ecobat Casa Grande will enhance Arizona’s sustainability footprint while expanding our battery industry and creating skilled jobs.”
