Volkswagen’s forthcoming introduction EV, the ID.2, will be available as a hatchback and a compact crossover. An AWD performance version with over 300 hp is also in the works.

According to AutoCar, the ID.2 R will be a “baby hot hatch” competing with the Abarth 500e.

Although details are scarce for now, we know that Volkswagen’s R performance division is currently developing several EVs. VW has previously stated that all new R vehicles will be fully electric by 2030.

ID.2 to unleash in 2025

A rugged ID.2 crossover variant is also speculated. It will likely replace the now-defunct ID Life. In Europe, where Volkswagen currently provides the ICE T-Cross and T-Roc, affordable compact crossovers are top-rated.

Volkswagen will undoubtedly hope that an ID.2 crossover will be capable of converting T-Cross and T-Roc owners to electric. The ID.2 is set to hit the market in the second quarter of 2025.

Volkswagen sold 118,000 EVs in the fourth quarter of 2022, a new high for the German automaker. In 2022, over 300,000 VW EVs were produced.

The ID.4/ID.5 was the clear best-seller last year, with 193,200 units delivered. The ID.3 hatchback, not sold in the United States, sold 76,600 units. The remaining deliveries were made up of China-only models such as the ID.6.

Volkswagen currently has five EV manufacturing plants. Two are in Germany (Zwicaku and Emden), two are in China (Foshan and Anting), and one is in the United States (Chattanooga, Tennessee).

The ID.2 is likely a European-only model, with production in either Zwicaku or Emden. However, exports to Asian markets may be feasible. After all, the ID.3 has been available in China since October 2021.
