China has maintained its rigorous “zero-COVID” policy through several methods, including mass testing, compulsory quarantines, and lockdowns, which strive to entirely eradicate the pandemic.
Teslarati reported that a surge in COVID cases prompted Volkswagen to halt operations at its Chengdu, China factory last week. VW has also paused two of the factory’s five manufacturing lines due to a parts shortage.
When will VW production resume?
The Chinese government and Volkswagen have yet to provide information regarding when production will start again. With China’s strict policy, VW and other automakers might have to wait till the current surge of cases subsides.
VW’s Chengdu plant
The American automaker’s Chengdu plant produces 600,000 cars a year. Notably, the VW ID.4, VW Golf, VW T-Roc, and Audi Q2 are presently produced in gas and electric versions at the factory.
It is remarkable that China has managed to maintain a low COVID case count compared to other countries. However, it has negatively affected automakers in many aspects.
That said, the consequences of these COVID regulations will be felt for the time being by automakers with significant production facilities in the nation, such as Volkswagen, Toyota, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, and Tesla.
