German legacy automaker Volkswagen recently confirmed plans to launch the all-electric version of the iconic Golf GTI in 2026, as per the Instagram post of Volkswagen Design Head Andreas Mindt.
Without further ado, here’s what we know about the upcoming all-electric hot hatch GTI.
Design
The new electric GTI features a stylish five-door with a three-letter badge and futuristic qualities, as shown in the concept car Volkswagen revealed in September 2023.
Volkswagen’s electric GTI sports a sharp face and a modern rear end. It also has a lower bumper opening, a sporty rear diffuser, and ground effects that improve athletic appearance.
Unfortunately, there are currently no available photos of the model’s cabin. However, Volkswagen released some concept drawings that revealed the integration of the steering wheel at the front of a landscape-oriented instrument display.
It also has a larger display in the center of the dashboard. In addition, it features a floating center console and attractive play-pause buttons on the pedals, among others.
Technical details
Volkswagen stated that the GTI will feature a high-performance powertrain. It will ride on the FWD-exclusive MEB Entry platform.
Volkswagen has not yet fully revealed the electric GTI’s powertrain. As of now, we know that the model is based on the VW ID.2all concept, which has a single motor in a front-wheel drive configuration.
Road and Track noted that the model is likely to offer a 56-kWh battery pack that can support charging speeds of up to 125 kW and adds 280 miles on the Euro WLTP cycle.
Availability and pricing
As mentioned, VW aims to launch the electric GTI in 2026. However, it did not disclose a more specific timeline for the model’s launch.
“The Golf GTI was first unveiled at the 1975 Frankfurt Motor Show with a production run of 5,000 units. To date, we have sold more than 2.8 million. In 2026, we will introduce an electric version of this iconic model.”

The German automaker has also yet to announce the target markets and pricing of the upcoming electric GTI. However, VW based the electric GTI on the ID.2all concept, which is estimated to be as cheap as a Polo.
