Volkswagen Group, through its arm Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VWCV), announced plans to raise the ID. Buzz production to 44,000 units this year.
The move is part of the automaker’s plan to lessen the customers’ wait times and expand the electric van‘s sales globally.
ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo’s current production
VWCV claims that it has produced over 32,000 of ID. Buzz Pro (passenger version) and ID. Buzz Cargo (the cargo van version) this year to date. That figure represents a significant production increase from just 10,800 units last year.
“A number that will now quickly multiply.”
VWCV CEO Carsten Intra told Automobilwoche
Automobilwoche via Electrive reports that only below 10,000 units were delivered to customers. Considering that there were apparently about 26,000 orders in Europe, thousands of customers are in queue until the estimated delivery time in Q3 2023.
VWCV will accelerate production to meet demands
As mentioned, the company plans to accelerate its delivery operation by significantly increasing its production.
“We plan to build 44,000 ID. Buzz to be built in Hanover.”
Chief Production Officer Josef Baumert
However, most of the production ramp-up is scheduled for mid-2024. VWCV expects the production halt for the soon-to-be phased-out VW T6. 1 van at the Hanover plant next year. Therefore, more space and resources would be allotted to the production of the ID. Buzz models.
When that happens, the company expects to reach a daily production rate of 650 to 700 units (about 3,250-3,500/week, assuming 5 days/week). Overall, that figure would be over 150,000 units annually.
VWCV to unveil the ID. Buzz long version in Summer 2023
The company expects the production ramp-up to allow the electric bus to penetrate other foreign markets.
As per the report, the ID. Buzz’s long version will have its unveiling in the summer of 2023. It will debut in the US and Japan next year, followed by other foreign markets.
“Plans to enter the Japanese market with the ID. Buzz are confirmed, and preparations are underway.”
VWCV CEO Carsten Intra told Automobilwoche
