German legacy automaker Volkswagen is reportedly contemplating of producing its “Trinity” electric vehicle at its Zwickau production plant, Handelsblatt reported on Friday, citing some company sources.
Report highlights
According to the German publication, Volkswagen will formally discuss the production site of the highly awaited electric car at its supervisory board meeting on Friday.
The company’s 20 committee members will reportedly attend the meeting to update on the factory conversion status and model distribution through the plants. They will also talk about the models’ production assignment for each site.
“…the board of directors around Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume wanted to inform about the status of the conversion as well as the distribution of the models via the plants. Which car will be built where is a delicate issue.”

The meeting will also decide on the investments for the following years and plant occupancy, the report noted.
More importantly, it will discuss the next-gen EVs that will ride on the company’s standard SSP (Scalable Systems Platform) platform.
About the Project Trinity
Volkswagen previously announced plans to launch the Trinity EV in 2026. According to Gear Patrol, the Trinity name comes from the concept that the model “embodies three concurrent themes that VW hopes will redefine the company: a new electronics platform, a simplified supply structure, and fully networked and intelligent production.”
It aims to use the SSP architecture for the flagship model, which supports 800-volt capacity.
According to CarBuzz, the model will be a high-end electric crossover/SUV that will sit between the Touareg and the Tiguan models. It will reportedly feature a dual motor and long-range drivetrain configurations to meet varying customer preferences.
However, current CEO Oliver delayed the Trinity project by two years to alleviate strain on the previously struggling software business unit Cariad, Reuters reports.
In hindsight, VW’s initial plan was to erect a dedicated Trinity EV factory. However, the multiple delays in brand establishment pushed the automaker to also contemplate factory conversion at its Wolfsburg site.
