Bjørn Nyland recently tested the all-new Volkswagen ID. Buzz (5-seat version), taking it first for the amusing banana box test to gauge its load capacity.

As per InsideEVs, the Volkswagen ID. Buzz is a sizable electric van with a relatively short front, which limits it from having a front trunk.

I seem to have developed an unhealthy yearning for the Volkswagen ID. Buzz already.

Volkswagen ID. Buzz’s luggage/payload compartment

The automaker specifies that the luggage/payload compartment of the VW ID. Buzz is:

  • ID. Buzz: up to 1,121 liters (39.6 cu ft); 2,205 liters after folding the second row of seats
  • ID. Buzz Cargo: more than 3.9 m3 (5.1 cubic yards), fitted with a partition behind the front seats; can take two euro pallets

Bjørn Nyland’s banana box test results on Volkswagen ID. Buzz

The VW ID Buzz could fit 30 banana boxes within the trunk once the extra shelf on the floor was removed. Any regular electric car or SUV cannot even come close to matching it.

Even more, the number of boxes can be raised to 49 after folding the back seats, which is about the same as the defunct Nissan e-NV200 van.

The Volkswagen ID Buzz might be considered by those who prefer to have a lot of storage space or a roomy interior for passengers, as evidenced by its performance on the banana box test.

However, it is not yet clear whether its boxy shape impacts its efficiency and range.

Bjørn Nyland’s banana box test on other cars

For reference, here are the results for selected cars that have undergone Bjørn Nyland’s banana box test (number of boxes: trunk+frunk/total after folding the rear seats):

  • VW e-Crafter 156/156
  • Nissan e-NV200 50/50
  • Volkswagen ID. Buzz 30/49
  • Mercedes EQV 13/35 (Info: 3rd row folded)
  • 2021 NIO ES8 (6 seater) 16/32 (Info: 3rd row folded)
  • Hongqi E-HS9 (6 seater) 16+0/30 (Info: 3rd row folded)
  • 2022 BYD Tang EV 15/28 (Info: 3rd row folded)
  • Tesla Model X (5 seater) 10+1/28
  • Tesla Model Y (MIC) 2021 9+1/26
  • Mercedes EQB 350 4Matic 12/25 (Info: 3rd row folded)
  • Hyundai Ioniq 5 11+0/25
  • Skoda Enyaq iV 10/25
  • Volkswagen ID.4 9/25
  • 2022 BMW iX xDrive50 8/25
  • Citroën ë-SpaceTourer (M) 10/24 (Info: 3rd row folded)
  • Audi Q4 e-tron 9/24
  • BMW iX3 9/24
  • Volkswagen ID.5 GTX 9/24
  • Tesla Model S pre-facelift 8+2/24
  • Mercedes-Benz EQS 8/24
  • 2022 Nissan Ariya 8/24
  • Tesla Model X 6 seater 9+1/23
  • Ford Mustang Mach-E 8+1/23
  • Audi e-tron 8+0/23

Storage is always a big consideration in a tiny place, especially in automobiles. Some people prefer a larger space and loading capacity to fit their needs. If you are among those people, you may want to look at Bjørn Nyland’s banana box tests to have a better idea.
