On March 15, Volkswagen is holding an event where the brand will specify its latest design language and new projects. At this event, Volkswagen is expected to unveil its ID.2 urban electric car.

The long-awaited electric vehicle has undergone a comprehensive internal and external redesign. The social media tag for the event (#VWforthepeople) suggests that Volkswagen is now prepared to show off the reworked mass-market hatchback.

Below are the key facts:

· The Volkswagen ID.2 electric vehicle is expected to go on sale in 2025.

· It is anticipated that the ID.2 will have a cabin space comparable to the Golf.

According to Volkswagen insiders who spoke with our sister publication Autocar UK, the compact five-seater is slated to go on sale in 2025 with an aimed base price of €22,500 (approximately Rs 19.55 lakh in today’s money). Additionally, the vehicle is being set up to receive the Golf name.

Volkswagen ID.2 EV’s platform

It has been reported that the Volkswagen ID.2 will be the first vehicle Volkswagen produced based on the MEB-Plus platform.

It is an upgraded version of the MEB electric car structure that is currently utilized by many manufacturers and features new LFP (lithium iron phosphate) prismatic battery cells and charging speeds of up to 200kW, amongst other advancements.

At this initial point, it is planned that the ID.2 will only be available in a form that has a single motor and front-wheel drive.

However, Volkswagen insiders have confirmed that the MEB-Plus platform will be able to support dual-motor, four-wheel-drive models. They have also stated that the possibility of such a configuration in the future cannot be ruled out.

“It will be relatively lightweight by electric car standards, somewhere between 1,600kg and 1,700kg.”

Thomas Schafer, the CEO of Volkswagen, also approved the GTI badge to make a comeback, which is another significant development for the automaker.

It is scheduled to replace the GTX model name in 2020 when it was first seen on the Volkswagen ID.4, thereby setting the stage for the first fully electric Volkswagen Golf GTI.

Volkswagen ID EV’s interior

In addition to its latest hatchback body style, the reformed ID.2 also adopts an updated look inside, with seating for up to five in a cabin that is claimed to offer similar space to the current MQB platform-based Golf.

Extra adjustments have been made to the information and entertainment system of the MIB.

They entail providing a rotary controller housed within a heavily revised center console. This advancement will originally appear on the third-generation Volkswagen Tiguan, which is scheduled to be revealed later this year.

The standard touchscreen controls on all Volkswagen models currently on the market will be supplemented by a rotary controller that will be a first for the company. It is intended to replace the slider mechanism, which was first seen on the ID.3 in the year 2020.

The Volkswagen brand and its ID electric car strategic plan are undergoing what Schafer calls a “comprehensive reset,” which includes the extensive revisions made to the ID.2.

New Volkswagen ID 2 EV tipped for 15 March reveal – Those privy to the early proposals of the redesigned ID 2 say it sits halfway between the existing internal combustion-engined Volkswagen Polo and Golf in terms of exterior dimensions, with a length put at “around 4250mm”.
