Volkswagen Passenger Cars’ global car sales reported year-on-year growth of 0.9% to 1.02 million units in the first quarter of 2023. However, it also indicates a major decline from Q1 2019’s record of more than 1.45 million units.

Volkswagen Passenger Cars global BEV sales – Q1 2023

VW’s all-electric car sales enjoyed a YoY growth of 31.2% to 70,000 in Q1 2023. That figure represents about 6.9% of the overall volume, a slight increase from 2022’s record of 5.3%.

However, that result also indicates a significant decline from Q3 and Q4 2022’s records of 91,200 and 118,000, respectively.

Best-selling models

Volkswagen Group disclosed in its Q1 2023 report that the top-selling models were the ID.4/ID.5 duo, with sales of 41,900 units. The VW ID.3 followed it with 23,600 sales.

Below are VW’s top models in Q1 2023 in terms of sales:

Year-to-date, VW reported BEV sales of 141,000 units, a significant increase from the 99,200 units a year ago.

Volkswagen Group sold 141,000 BEVs globally in Q1, +42% from last year.

Volkswagen Passenger Cars global BEV sales – 2022

In retrospect, VW’s BEV sales enjoyed a YoY growth of 23.5% to 325,100 units globally in 2022.  Of that total, the majority (around 170,000) was contributed by the VW ID.4.

2022 results:

Say hello to the Volkswagen ID.4 GTX. This one gets a 82 kWh battery, power is sent to all wheels and it generates 299 PS and 400 Nm. 0-100 takes 6.2 seconds and the top speed is electronically limited to 180 km/hr. Range? In the whereabouts of 400 kms.

It will be fascinating to observe if the Volkswagen brand picks up momentum later this year as it currently does not seem to be increasing BEV sales quickly enough in comparison to several competitors.

Interestingly, the brand seems to be betting on its new ID.7 model to drive sales in the coming quarters,

“We started the year on a sound footing for all-electric vehicles with a 68 percent increase in Europe and double the number of vehicles delivered in the USA. At the Shanghai Auto Show this week, we demonstrated how we are responding to the challenges we face in this segment in China, and in March we already saw sales there increase year-on-year.

The Volkswagen ID.701, which has just been unveiled, will give us further tailwind in all core markets. We will keep our sights on our ambitious goal of BEVs accounting for around one in ten vehicles delivered globally to customers this year.”
