German legacy automaker Volkswagen Group has officially announced plans to adopt Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) across its brands starting in 2025.
The announcement leaves Stellantis as the only automaker that has not yet committed to Tesla’s charging standard in the region.
VW Group brands to gain access to Tesla Supercharging network
According to the press release, Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, and Scout Motors will integrate the NACS port in their next-gen electric vehicles starting in 2025.
Meanwhile, existing models equipped with the Combined Charging System (CCS) charging port will have an adapter to secure compatibility with the Tesla Superchargers‘ connectors.
Volkswagen asserted that Scout Motors’ access to the Tesla Supercharging network would only commence as soon as it launched its EV models on the market.
Volkswagen’s decision to adopt NACS can expand its customers’ charging options with an additional 15,000+ Tesla Superchargers in North America.
For context, VW Group EV owners currently access 3,800+ fast charging outlets from Electrify America and Electrify Canada. Notably, Electrify America also committed to include NACS in its portfolio by 2025, alongside the CCS.
“This is great news for our electric vehicle customers in the North American Region. This potentially provides them with access to more than 15,000 additional charging points as well as the current near-4,000 DC fast charging outlets operated by Electrify America. It would mean that customers of our fast-selling electric vehicles like the Volkswagen ID.4 will have access to an extensive and growing charging network.”

NACS adoption progress
Tesla originally introduced NACS as its flagship EV charging connector. That said, it is really remarkable that the connector rapidly advanced as the most preferred option in North America.
In a pivotal moment in the industry, Tesla’s closest American rival, Ford, strongly backed the NACS connector. Last summer, it announced its commitment to adopt the new charging standard, which prompted all other players to join the trend.
“Earlier this year, the North American Charging standard was just an idea. Today, with the VW Group’s commitment, almost every major automotive manufacturer is onboard, rallying behind a shared vision of improving charging experiences for all EV drivers. This is only the beginning of our industry-wide efforts to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.”
