Vision Marine Technologies, the global leader in the electric recreational marine propulsion industry, has recently achieved a new speed record of 109 mph with its electric boat at the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, according to Electrek.
The 34th annual event catered to numerous viewers both in-person and via internet video streaming.
Although Vision Marine is most known for developing, selling, and leasing electric boats, it is also working on creating the most potent outboard electric powertrain that will be compatible with the majority of boats built for outboard motors.
With the primary goal of setting new records, Vision Marine and Hellkat Powerboats collaborated to create the V32, a 32′ catamaran hull that was specially designed to hold the necessary battery banks to run a pair of Vision Marine’s signature E-MotionTM electric outboard motors.
Shaun Torrente of Shaun Torrente Racing (“STR”), who was also in charge of rigging, setting up, and testing the V32 in Florida over several months, and the internal engineering team at Vision Marine created the V32 from scratch.
Together with Octillion Power Systems, which also served as the race’s sponsor, Vision Marine created a specially shaped battery pack to power this newly developed technology.
The monitoring systems on board were enhanced by Nextfour Solutions, while the outdrives were designed by Pat Weissman of Weissman Marine.
Finally, the new electric speed boat from Vision Marine was brought to the Lake of The Ozarks Shootout last weekend to become the first electric boat to reach 100 mph. Impressively, the company exceeded the 100 mph target as it reached a record-breaking 109 mph top speed.
Vision Marine Xavier Montagne CTO & COO stated: “The results we observed from this weekend’s race are only the tip of the iceberg. This accomplishment is the fruit of many years of close technical collaboration with our European and American partners. We worked hard on optimizing the electric motors, the 700V batteries, the cooling circuitry, and the hardware and software integration, all of which are quintessential to our success as a leader in the electric marine propulsion industry.”
STR’s Shaun Torrente added: “It has been an amazing experience to push the boundaries of what people thought was impossible. In the past two days, we proved that the limits of electric propulsion are only in the minds of those that have not followed Vision Marine and our project. With this result, they cannot pretend we are not here anymore.”
Additionally, Paul Beach, President of Octillion Power Systems, stated: “We are at the forefront of revolutionizing the boating industry; we are pushing the limits with our innovative technology. I praise Octillion’s engineering team, who worked closely with Shaun Torrente and Vision Marine’s in-house R&D team to design a state of the art battery pack to nourish the E-Motion™ propulsion system rigged on the V32.”
The focus of Vision Marine extends beyond racing. Its management is adamant that the commercial boating industry needs a high-performance electric outboard that can handle a variety of vessel applications immediately.
