US registrations for all-electric cars topped 458,000 through August 2022

Experian’s most recent registration data indicates that 458,786 new battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) were registered in the US during the first eight months of 2022. It has increased by around 56% in more than a year, as per InsideEVs.

In addition, BEVs contributed roughly 5% of all registrations during the period compared to 2.6% in 2021. On the other hand, Tesla has a 65% market share in the BEV market with about 300,000 new registrations. Over the previous year, Tesla’s volume climbed by about 54%.

As per the report, the fact Non-Teslas also observed a rapid growth rate of 61% to 160,403 is quite encouraging. Additionally, they progressively took 35% more market share from Tesla in the first eight months. In retrospect, they only held 34% of the market through July and 32% for the first half of the year.

BEVs registrations in January-August 2022:

·       Tesla (65% BEVs): 298,383 (up 53.6% from 194,202)

·       Non-Tesla (35% BEVs): 160,403 (up 61%)

·       Total: 458,786 (up 56%) and 5% share (up from 2.6%)

Top brands/models

Approximately 258,000 fully electric vehicles were sold, with the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 being the best-selling models. These two Tesla models are relatively close to each other with 134,978 and 123,634 units, respectively.

Meanwhile, Ford Mustang Mach-E with 25,596 sales came in third. The Tesla Model S with 20,032 and the Model Xwith 19,739, are positioned behind it.

The report also indicated that the Hyundai Motor Group (which includes the Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis brands) with 43,072 registrations comes in second among manufacturers, ahead of Ford with 33,354 units.

·        Volkswagen ID.4 – 9,127 (down 15%)

·        Nissan LEAF – 8,740

·        Polestar 2 – N/A

·        Porsche Taycan family – 5,405 (down 21%)

·        Jaguar I-PACE – 286 (down 68%)

·        Genesis – N/A

Premium/luxury segment

Tesla remains the leading automaker in the premium/luxury segment with 298,383 units. BMW and Mercedes-Benz are in second and third place, respectively, with 211,118 and 183,509 registrations. Meanwhile, Audi followed Lexus in fourth place with 116,913 units.

Premium brand registrations in the US – January-June 2022:

·        Tesla: 298,383 (up 53.6%)

·        BMW: 211,118 (down 10.6%)

·        Mercedes-Benz: 183,509 (down 7.0%)

·        Lexus: 180,520 (down 19.6%)

·        Audi: 116,913 (down 26.3%)

Electric vehicles are expected to become the next game changer in technology and transportation. They have the capability to reshape the ways in which energy is produced, used, and directed. They have also been shown to have a lot more positive effects on society, which explains why EVs are increasingly popular in the United States.
