Electric vehicle giant Tesla has finally announced the new schedule for the highly anticipated debut of its purpose-built robotaxi during the Q2 2024 Earnings Call.
Musk teases delayed Cybercab reveal will feature “a couple of other things”
Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk formally announced on Tuesday that the electric automaker will unveil the new robotaxi on October 10, 2024.
The new schedule indicates approximately two months of delay from what Tesla had originally announced.
CEO Musk explained that he wanted to “make some important changes that I think would improve” the robotaxi, dubbed the “Cybercab.”
The Tesla boss also teased that these sudden plan changes will enable the company to “show off a couple of other things.” However, CEO Musk omitted to reveal more specific details about these things.
Bloomberg recently reported that Tesla decided to postpone the Robotaxi debut event by about two months from the original August 8, 2024 schedule. While CEO Musk acknowledged the report in an X post at the time, he has not announced the new timeline yet.
Robotaxi significance
Tesla CEO Elon Musk claims that developing and producing autonomous driving cars, including a robotaxi for its planned ride-hailing business, is crucial for the company’s future as an extraordinarily valuable Artificial Intelligence company.
However, it remains to be seen if the Musk-led automaker can actually solve the autonomous driving puzzle. As of now, Tesla offers its “Full Self-Driving” (FSD) suite, which ironically still requires driver supervision.
Despite the substantial role the new robotaxi would play for Tesla’s future, the company foretold that the “timing of robotaxi deployment depends on technological advancement and regulatory approval.”
What to expect from the Tesla robotaxi?
Tesla has not yet revealed specific details about the upcoming robotaxi other than hints that it will not feature a steering wheel or pedals.
Tesla also teased that it will sport a “Cybertruck-like” design, which is probably why CEO Musk refers to the robotaxi as the “Cybercab.”
Tesla also revealed that the robotaxi will still use the revolutionary “unboxed” manufacturing strategy, which can yield significant cost reductions and accelerate production.
We can expect to learn more about Tesla’s robotaxi near its official debut on October 10, 2024.
