United Kingdom reported over 26% year-on-year increase in its new passenger car registrations to 74,441 units, per Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). More than 206,000 new registrations had been made after two months, an increase of 18.6%.
Plug-in electric car registrations – February 2023
It is worth noting that new registrations of plug-in electric vehicles also grew last month. However, it failed to match the rapid growth of the overall car market, which indicates that PEVs’ market share marginally declined YoY.
According to SMMT’s data, the UK had 17,033 new plug-in vehicle registrations, up 13% YoY. As mentioned, its market share dropped to 22.9% from 25.6% in 2022.
Of that total volume, BEVs accounted for 12,310 units. It represents an 18% YoY sales growth and 16.5% of the market.
Meanwhile, plug-in hybrid vehicles recorded 4,723 new registrations. It indicates a slight YoY sales growth of 1% and a market share of 6.3%.

The UK recorded over 43,000 new passenger plug-in electric car registrations year-to-date. It represents a 13% growth YoY and a 21.0% market share.

Top models in the UK
Two models from British automaker secured the top 2 spots: Vauxhall Corsa (2,818) and Vauxhall Mokka (1,805). It is followed by America’s Ford Puma (1,590) and Japan’s Nissan Juke. The top 5 were completed by South Korea’s Hyundai Tucson (1,528).
Remarkably, US EV giant Tesla’s Model Y landed 6th with 1,482 sales.
