Electric vehicle adoption is increasing globally, perhaps slower than in Europe’s wealthier northern nations. With increased EV sales comes the demand for more EV charging stations.

Denmark’s electric vehicle uptake has been influential, which is excellent news for Danes and the environment. Still, it is also a trend that could result in severe obstacles at EV fast chargers for EV drivers on long drives or who do not have home or workplace charging.

It intends to deploy over 300 extra fast chargers from Tritium.

Easier and accessible EV fast chargers

OK is Denmark’s largest fuel retailer. The installation of EV fast chargers across the country serves two purposes for the EV revolution.

For starters, it allows for more and easier EV fast charging for EV drivers. Second, it makes many more Danish drivers conscious that electric vehicles are here to stay and can be charged quickly in the same places a fossil-fueled car can be fueled.

🇩🇰⚡ Charge up Denmark!

OK a.m.b.a. has purchased over 300 Tritium DC fast chargers to expand the nation's EV charging infrastructure.

300 Tritium fast charger at OK

OK has already purchased over 300 Tritium fast chargers. There’s no word on when they’ll be available, but that suggests they’ll be available soon.

There is also plenty of room for additional large orders. “OK currently operates over 670 filling stations in Denmark.

These fuel stations are co-located with Coop retail outlets, Denmark’s largest consumer goods retailer.

According to Tritium, the latest charging points will give Danish drivers access to fast and convenient charging infrastructure.

This 300+ charger acquisition should be considered alongside Denmark’s current EV charging network. By the end of 2022, the country had 784 EV fast chargers, so a 300+ addition would significantly boost the existing network.

Notably, the 784 total was a threefold increase over the previous year.

This deployment of Tritium fast chargers is a portion of OK’s larger plan to help the expansion of Denmark’s public charging network in both small and large Danish cities, supplying the fast charging infrastructure required to support the Danish Government’s goal of at least 775,000 electric or plugin hybrid cars on the country’s road network by 2030, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70%.

The EU has launched a Green Deal Industrial Plan. With a comprehensive package and faster access to funding that will help support the roll-out of EV charging infrastructure across Europe.

40% is the ideal EV adoption rate worldwide

Almost 40% of the latest vehicle sales in Denmark were plugin vehicle sales in 2022.

That’s one of the ideal EV adoption rates in the world, but it’s still less than half of new car sales. However, introducing 300+ EV fast chargers could help the country pass the 50% mark.

The market share of plugin vehicles increased from 23.8% in 2021 to 38.6% in 2022. We’ll see if the country can reach 50% by 2023.

Sweden may have short reports, but it does have some good EV fast-charging news.

IONITY to collaborate

IONITY, a European EV fast-charging giant, and Regio, a property company, are collaborating to introduce many more EV fast-charging infrastructures online.

They intend to install 108 more EV rapid charging points at 12 additional fast charging stations in the coming year.

The number of new stations may appear insignificant, but the total number of charging points at those 12 stations matters.

There are better ways than just installing four charging stations at 27 locations. Installing nine charging points on average at 12 stations is the way to go. There is no risk of congestion or long queues at charging points.

The charging points will have power capacities of up to 350 kW — assuming your vehicle can handle that much power.

The fast charging stations will be installed “from Skellefteå in the far north to Karlskrona in the southeast of Sweden.

Amusingly, IONITY says that the goal clientele for these charging stations is divided into two groups: those who require a fast charge while on the road and those who require fast charging choices for their normal daily or almost daily charging needs.

IONITY does not specify whether certain stations are more suited toward specific populations and others toward others.

Still, one must assume that this is being considered and that the different requirements of various EV owners are driving station location choices.

The 12 new sites are aimed at both long-distance travellers, who can enjoy retail and catering facilities during battery recharge, and the growing number of EV owners who want to incorporate fast, public charging into their everyday routines

IONITY stataed in a statement

We’ve come a long way… back in 2017 these 50 kW (on left) were free and the only ones in the motorway, connecting Portugal to Europe.
Now these new @alpitronic chargers give a new breed to Portuguese interior EV mobility!

Latest IONITY charging points in 2023

However, it’s not all Growing our high-power charging network across Europe is a top priority for us

Marcus Groll,COO of IONITY stated on IONITY charging points

For IONITY, this represents a significant increase in EV charging infrastructure in Sweden.

IONITY currently operates 23 stations in Sweden, with a total of 136 EV fast charging ports. (Note that that’s fewer than six charging points per station. IONITY has determined that having more charging points per station is essential.)

The addition of 108 charging points nearly doubles the country’s IONITY EV fast charging options. Add 28 more charging points, and it could be a clean doubling. And, if you’re smart, you could do it in just one or two places.

Returning to reality, IONITY hopes to have most of this latest charging infrastructure in place by 2023. The planning process for all stations has begun.
