Toyota, through its North American arm, reported a whopping tenfold growth in its electric car sales in the US market in 2023, with total xEV sales reaching a new high at 202,185 units.
For context, xEV includes all electrified vehicle types, such as hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery electrics, and fuel cells.
Overall, Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) sold 2,248,477 vehicles in the US in the full year 2023. According to the press release, it indicates a notable 7% growth from the prior year on a daily selling rate (DSR) basis.
xEV sales in Q4 2024
Toyota successfully expanded its xEV portfolio to 26 models in 2023, substantially boosting its sales volume in the US market.
In fact, its xEV sales grew 61% year-on-year to a record 202,185 units in Q4 2023. It accounted for an astounding 32.6% of the Group’s overall sales volume. Refer to the table below:

Toyota’s strong performance in the fourth quarter of last year boosted the total xEV sales by more than 30% to 657,327 units in 2023. It contributed a notable 29% share in the company’s overall vehicle sales.

Our teams are busy preparing for an outstanding 2024 to bring 22 new, refreshed or special edition vehicles to showrooms, including sedans and more electrified options to satisfy strong customer demand. By the end of 2025, we plan to have an electrified option available for every Toyota and Lexus vehicle in the US.”

Plug-in car sales in Q4 2024
Toyota also enjoyed impressive growth in its plug-in car sales in 2023, particularly in the battery-electric vehicle segment.
According to InsideEVs, Toyota Group’s plug-in car sales increased by 58% YoY to 16,657 units and accounted for 2.7% of its volume. Presented below are the detailed data:

Toyota’s electrification push seems to be bearing fruit despite its late entry into the electric vehicle industry. Excitingly, the Japanese legacy automaker aims to launch an EV version for all Toyota and Lexus models in the US market by the end of 2025. In the same year, its 10th North Carolina factory will kick off EV battery production to support the current 26 and upcoming EV models production in the US.
