Toyota experienced challenges in electrificationToyota to keep hybrid vehicles

It has even lobbied to slow EV deployment and spread EV misinformation. Toyota decided to disassemble the Tesla Model Y as part of its renewed effort to invest in battery-electric vehicles.

Taking the skin off the Model Y was truly a work of art. It’s unbelievable

Toyota Executive stated on Tesla Model Y

“Toyota & Honda are losing more customers to #EV buyers than any other brands in the American market. And most of them are going to Tesla … The two Japanese brands account for over 28% of new #Tesla customers, according to S&P Global.” https://t.co/MMjd6mwNg6 $TSLA @elonmusk pic.twitter.com/dyX8kSjkiO

Toyota experienced challenges in electrification

The simplicity of Tesla’s vehicle architecture and powertrain has particularly impressed the Japanese automaker.

Despite producing automobiles for nearly a century, Toyota has encountered difficulties with its recent transition to electric vehicles.

Toyota’s first global all-electric vehicle, the bZ4x, was subjected to a significant safety recall, halting the program for the next two years.

It is now attempting to learn from Tesla as it intends to build a new EV platform to release new electric vehicles beginning in 2026.

Toyota has been among the slowest to introduce and scale up production of fully electric vehicles.

Toyota has yet to gain meaningful traction with its EVs despite initiating the hybrid market through the launch of the Prius.

Toyota has been criticized as a laggard when it comes to electric cars but the world’s biggest automaker says a blended strategy of EVs, plug-in hybrids and Prius-like hybrids can have a bigger impact on curbing carbon emissions in the near term. https://t.co/2CqabVlbk3

Toyota to keep hybrid vehicles

In August, for example, a Toyota executive stated that “the consumer isn’t demanding [EVs] at that level,” referring to the United States’ objective of achieving 50% electric vehicle sales share by 2030.

Most automakers need help with the demand for their electric vehicles. Almost every other automaker plans to launch numerous new EV models in the near future as they transition to an all-electric future.

Instead, the company has insisted on keeping to its hybrid vehicle strategy, which has proven successful, propelling them to the top of the automotive industry.

Nevertheless, the industry is rapidly changing beneath their feet. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), 13% of new cars sold in 2022 will be electric, up from 6.6 million in 2021. On the other hand, Toyota had to stop production of its first EV model, the bZ4X, due to safety recalls.

President @CyrilRamaphosa is visiting the Toyota South Africa production plant in Durban, KZN, to officiate at the launch of the Toyota Cross Hybrid vehicle.
