Japanese legacy automaker Toyota officially launched its first pure electric sedan, bZ3, powered by BYD battery and motor, in the world’s largest auto market. Chinese media reports, citing FAW-Toyota, that 5,000 orders were placed for the bZ3 on its first day of sale, indicating a positive response to the product’s launch.

About the bZ3

Background

In hindsight, Toyota initially unveiled the bZ3 model as its second all-electric EV under its Beyond Zero (BZ) portfolio in October 2022.

Toyota bZ3 occurs after the Japanese automaker’s first electric offering, bZ4X SUV.

Toyota starts presale of the bZ4X in China with two variants from its North/South JVs.

For those unaware, FAW Group and Toyota’s long-standing joint venture FAW Toyota and Chinese EV giant BYD formed a new JV named “BYD Toyota EV Technology.” This JV is responsible for the development of the all-new bZ3 model.

Technical details and pricing

As mentioned earlier, Toyota’s new EV offering is equipped with BYD’s Li-ion LFP Blade battery, motor, and control system. However, it still utilizes Toyota’s e-TNGA platform.

Compared to the bZ4X model, the bZ3 has a low center of gravity and enhanced interior design. It boasts a suspended multimedia navigation system that measures 12.8 inches.

FAW-Toyota launched the first bZ3 EV in March 2023. It has a maximum CLTC range of 616 km (about 382 mi) with a base price of 189,800 RMB ($27,000).

The joint venture offers the bZ3 in three variants: Elite PRO, long-range PRO, and long-range Premium models.

Below are the bZ3’s variants, along with their prices and respective ranges:

As for the battery sizes, the bZ3 offers two configurations: 135 kW and 180 kW. Both batteries offer a 303 nm (224 lb-ft) top torque. Meanwhile, the 49.9 kWh and 65.3 kWh battery packs allow a CLTC range of 517 km (321 miles) and 616 km (382), correspondingly.

Remarkably, the EV can also replenish from 30%-80% in just 27 minutes using a DC fast charger, per the company.

Meanwhile Toyota’s BZ3 electric vehicle, using BYD batteries, has started to roll out in China. Priced well below the Tesla Model 3, whose sales have slumped in China, the BZ3 shows that Toyota is beginning to deliver on its lofty EV ambitions. pic.twitter.com/07rymX2BMA

For those interested, FAW-Toyota also offers a “limited benefit” of 15,000 RMB ($2,180) for customers who purchase the bZ3 from April 16 to July 31, 2023.
