Passenger plug-in electric car registrations grew by approximately 63% year-on-year to 1,067,248 units globally in January 2024 alone, EV-Volumes data revealed. This sales figure enabled the segment to hold about 16% of the automotive market, with Tesla’s all-electric crossover Model Y leading the rankings.
Top 20 EV models
As mentioned, the Tesla Model Y has once again dominated the electric vehicle market with 74,230 sales in January 2024.
Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD trailed behind with its Song family selling a total of 52,290 units. The Tesla Model 3 landed third spot with 35,109 unit sales. Interestingly, Chinese-made models completed the top 10. Refer to the table below:

Top 20 EV brands
Considering that BYD sells both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicle models, it is only natural for the Chinese brand to exceed Tesla’s all-electric vehicle sales.
BYD led the rankings of the top 20 brands with a total of 195,411 sales in January 2024. Tesla trailed behind with 113,978 BEV sales.

As expected, Chinese new energy vehicle giant BYD remained the leader in the plug-in electric vehicle market, which consists of BEVs and PHEVs.
