Norway has been the industry leader for electric vehicles when it comes to adoption per capita. However, it must be noted that America’s Tesla Model Y is largely responsible for this year’s surge.

In fact, the American model recently broke the national record for the most vehicles sold in a year, as per Electrek.

Tesla’s electric SUV has reportedly broken the 1969 VW Beetle benchmark of 16,709-unit sales by delivering a record-breaking 16,748 units this year to date.

Boom! The record just broke 🤠@tesla Model Y just passed all-time-high sale in a year since the still standing 1969 record; 16699 VW Beetle in Norway

Now at 16701 with 9 days left 🎊

At this rate, Tesla has a high potential to deliver about 18,000 Model Ys in the country before the year ends.

Norway’s EV industry

Norway aims to ban sales of internal combustion engine vehicles by 2025 in an effort to promote electric vehicle adoption in the country.

Remarkably, that target can be achieved earlier than expected with Norway’s current pace.

In hindsight, all-electric vehicles comprised 64.5% of all vehicles sold in Norway in 2021.

If plug-in hybrids are taken into account, Norway might end 2022 with an annual share closer to 80% or 90%.

Notably, Norway is in a position to adopt EVs more quickly owing to its advantages of being a rich and small country. However, these upsides will diminish over time as EV prices decline. That said, similar developments to those in Norway will be possible in other markets.

Considering Norway’s EV push, it would not be surprising if it hits its target of all EV sales by 2024. Meanwhile, Tesla‘s model has the potential to continue leading the Norwegian market as it does other international markets.
