The Tiguan, Volkswagen’s best-selling SUV, will reside in the electric age—the ID. Tiguan electric SUV is expected to be built at Volkswagen’s main plant in Wolfsburg.
VW to release an electric Tiguan SUV
Volkswagen made some exciting announcements at a works council meeting Thursday at its Wolfsburg head office, where Chancellor Olaf Scholz was present.
For instance, VW confirmed to Handelsblatt that a new electric model will be assembled at the factory in 2026, an SUV identical in size and style to the brand’s best-selling Tiguan.
They also stated that the electric Tiguan would be produced on Volkswagen’s improved MEB-Plus platform.
The announcement comes just a day after Autocar reported that VW has wholly remodeled it is ID.2, implying that the iconic Golf branding will carry over into the EV era as the ID. Golf.
we have iconic brand names, we will stick with the ID logic, but iconic models will carry a name,
Thomas Shafer, CEO of VM’s passenger cars stated on Tiguan SUV launching
Many customers, according to VW, have requested that models such as the Golf, GTI, and Tiguan be transformed into electric. CEO Oliver Blume clarified the carmaker was working on it at the meeting, explaining:
The Golf is an icon – a whole generation was named after it. That’s why we also want to bring vehicles like the Golf and the Tiguan into the electric age
Oliver Blume, CEO of VM stated on Golf and Tiguan’s electrification
Although Blume provided no additional information, earlier comments indicate that it will be known as the ID. Tiguan. The ID. Tiguan is expected to play an essential role in VW’s strategy until the production of its flagship Trinity EV.
ID. Tiguan to replace Trinity EV
Trinity, which former CEO Herbert Diess claimed would “revolutionize Volkswagen,” was supposed to launch in 2026 but was postponed due to software problems.
Volkswagen announced a five-year investment plan earlier this month to increase electric vehicle manufacturing and modernize its software. Despite this, the project’s new CEO, Blume, expects it to be operational by the decade’s end.
The electric Tiguan is set to fill the void, debuting in 2026. “we have now closed the gap that will arise in 2026.” said Daniela Cavallo, head of the works council.
Due to chip shortages, VW will use its Wolfsburg plant to electrify one of its most famous brand names to increase production and sales.
However, unlike Golf, VW’s Tiguan is a truly global car popular in many markets beyond Europe and can help the brand transition into the electric era.
