Pre-orders for the Volvo EX90 electric SUV are now open on the US website, as reported by InsideEVs.
The SUV made its official North American debut at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in 2023. Volvo collaborated with Google and Luminar to create the all-electric seven-seater SUV, termed “the smartest vehicle yet.”
2024 Volvo EX90 Features
The 2024 EX90 has a long-range lidar, five radars, eight cameras, and 16 ultrasonic sensors that can respond when the driver isn’t paying enough attention to the road. A lidar system called Luminar is standard on all EX90 vehicles. Volvo can identify small objects “approximately two football fields ahead in day or night, and even at highway speed.”
There is also a system known as the “driver understanding system.” It consists of a touch-sensitive steering wheel and two cameras that continuously monitor the driver’s attention and activate the other safety systems if necessary.
It has a central 14.5-inch touchscreen with Google services and apps, including Google Assistant for voice control and Google Maps for routing. The EX90 will also provide wireless Apple CarPlay for Apple users.
The Polestar 3 and Volvo’s brand-new electric SUV share a 111 kWh battery system with a 107 kWh usable capacity, a pair of simultaneous permanent magnet motors, and other mechanical components.
Although the company has yet to make the EPA-rated range publicly known, we understood that the EX90 had an approximate area of 372 miles (600 kilometers) when we attended the global reveal in Europe. For comparison, the Polestar 3, using the same battery and motors, is EPA rated at 270 miles. Therefore, when the official EPA rating is released, anticipate Volvo’s model to fall somewhere in the middle.
The EX90 uses a 400-volt structure, which means it needs 600 amps, and not all fast chargers can provide such high amperage. Even so, the car can accept a maximum of 250 kW, enabling a 30-minute top-up from 10 to 80 percent—the time to recharge doubles if the CCS charger can only produce 300 amps at roughly 400 volts.
The 380 kW (510 hp) and 617 pound-feet (910 Nm) combined output of the EX90’s two electric motors are the same as those of the Polestar 3 with the Efficiency Pack. Volvo has not revealed the EX90’s acceleration or top speed. However, we know that its Polestar cousin can reach a maximum speed of 130 mph (210 km/h) and a 0-60 mph period of 4.6 seconds.
The company’s US website shows that the 2024 Volvo EX90 is up for pre-order, with a “well-equipped” model costing under $80,000. Meanwhile, assembly is expected to start in South Carolina later this year, and a $500 refundable deposit is needed.
