Tesla’s October 2022 sales in China shows mixed results

Following the disclosure of export data for Tesla‘s China-made cars, the electric vehicle giant’s retail sales breakdown is now public.

Tesla Model Y sales

Recent data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) shows that 14,391 Tesla Model Y cars were sold retail in China in October. This figure is down 69.18% from 46,694 units in September. However, it increased by 8.18% from 13,303 units YoY.

Tesla Model 3 sales

In October, 2,809 Tesla Model 3 cars were sold at retail in the country. It has increased by 565.64% from 422 units a year before. However, it has decreased by 90.91% from 30,919 units in September.

Tesla China’s exports

Tesla builds new cars in the first half of the quarter mainly for export. The figures for October reflected that trend.

In fact, Tesla China sold 71,704 units wholesale. According to the CPCA, it comprises 54,504 units for export.

CPCA’s list revealed that the Model Y maintained its top spot in sales of high-end SUVs with a base price over RMB 300,000 ($41,400), despite having lesser deliveries in October.

China’s popular premium SUVs in October

Tesla Model Y maintains the top spot with a dominant 14,391 units. The top 5 were completed by the BMW X3 (12,592), Mercedes-Benz GLC (11,983), Audi Q5 (10,519), and Li Auto Li L9 (9,181 units). 

The BYD Song took the top spot in the overall SUV sales chart for October, with 56,138 units sold. It was followed by the Haval H6 with 29,611 and BYD Yuan Plus with 20,418 units. The fourth placer is the Honda CR-V with 17,071, followed by the BYD Tang with 16,989 units. On the other hand, the Model Y came in 10th place with 14,391 units sold.
