Tesla stats key source Troy Teslike disclosed that the estimated Tesla order backlog declined 29% from March 31 to approximately 72,000 units globally in the first half of April this year.
Interestingly, these data may explain why the electric vehicle giant has been implementing price cuts in major markets, such as the US and Europe.
Estimated global order backlog record
Troy Teslike provided his calculations on Tesla’s order backlog, along with its previous records. Refer to the table below:
Period | Units | Manufacturing Capacity |
April 15, 2023: | 72,000 | 22 days |
March 31, 2023: | 102,000 | 28 days |
March 16, 2023: | 103,000 | 29 days |
February 28, 2023: | 106,000 | 30 days |
February 15, 2023: | 106,000 | 30 days |
January 31, 2023: | 87,000 | 26 days |
January 15, 2023: | 107,000 | 30 days |
December 31, 2022: | 74,000 | 23 days |
December 8, 2022: | 163,000 | 40 days |
November 30, 2022: | 190,000 | 44 days |
October: 31, 2022: | 285,000 | – |
September 30, 2022: | 299,000 | – |
August 31, 2022: | 385,000 | – |
March-July, 2022: | around 470,000 | – |
January-February, 2022: | less than 400,000 | – |
As you can see in the table, the April 15 record of 72,000 units equates to around 22 days of manufacturing capacity. This figure indicates a six-day decline in just two weeks.
These data clearly explain the April 19 report that Tesla implemented a $2,000-$3,000 price cut on its Model 3 and Y in the US. Additionally, Tesla car prices in Europe were reportedly lowered by up to 10%.
Nonetheless, these recent price cuts may suggest that Tesla is just altering prices to maintain a balance between supply and demand.
Estimated global order backlog per market
All major markets, including the United States, Europe, and China, have “red” (too low) marks.
Estimated order backlog per market:
Markets | Units | Manufacturing Capacity | Changes |
United States: | 28,892 | 23 days | decreased by 9 days in two weeks |
Canada: | 1,230 | 23 days | decreased by 4 days in two weeks |
Europe: | 21,531 | 24 days | decreased by 9 days in two weeks |
China: | 11,869 | 15 days | no change |
other: | 8,654 | 37 days | decreased by 7 days in two weeks |
Total: | 72,176 | 22 days | decreased by 6 days in two weeks |
As you can see in the table, Tesla’s estimated order backlog in the US dropped nearly 29,000 on April 15 from roughly 45,000 units. This figure represents around 23 days’ worth of supply and a nine-day decrease.
Europe suffered a similar weak backlog record with a decline below 22,000 from more than 33,000 units.
