Leading American electric automaker Tesla successfully maintained its lead in key European markets last year, including the UK, Norway, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and Denmark.
Tesla’s unstoppable dominance is unsurprising, considering its significant contribution to the growth in electric vehicle market share in the region.
UK
According to Teslarati, Tesla had a 15.3% share of the electric vehicle market in the United Kingdom. This figure enabled the American brand to beat even local rivals like MG and BMW by over 6%.
As expected, the popular Tesla Model Y led the market’s sales ranking in 2023. As per registration data monitored by EU-EVs, the all-electric crossover registered a total of 34,334 units.
The MG4 trailed behind with sales of 20,129 units, while the Tesla Model 3 sedan secured the fourth spot with 12,774 units.
Norway
Tesla controlled an astounding 23.6% of the Norwegian market, with the Model Y leading the sales rankings. According to Gear Musk, it marks the third straight year that Tesla led overall auto sales in the country.
The popular American crossover reportedly had a total registration of 23,058 units, indicating an almost fourfold lead from Volkswagen ID. 4’s 6,336 registrations. Unfortunately, the Tesla Model 3 failed to get in the top 10, with only 2,081 registrations in 2023.
Netherlands
Tesla also dominated the Netherlands with a notable market share of 17%. German rival BMW followed with a market share of 8.3%, while Volkswagen had 8%.
The world’s top-selling vehicle, the Tesla Model Y, significantly boosted the company’s sales growth in the country with 13,714 registrations. The Swedish Volvo XC40 trailed far behind with only 6,309 units.
Spain
Tesla enjoyed a 22% share in the Spanish electric vehicle market in 2023. Unsurprisingly, the Tesla Model Y and 3 were the top contributors, with 6,843 and 6,123 registrations, respectively. Overall, the Musk-led company’s deliveries in countries last year reached 13,260 units.
The MG4 ranked third, while the Dacia Spring landed the next spot. Even if we combine these models’ registrations, it would still fall short of the Tesla Model 3 or Y’s figures.
Sweden
Despite the struggles Tesla faced in Sweden due to the strike, the Musk-led company still managed to grow its market share to 17.4% in 2023. Its German rival, Volkswagen, followed with a 15.1% market share. Meanwhile, Swedish automaker Volvo ranked third with a 10.7% market share.
The Tesla Model Y once again dominated the sales rankings with an unprecedented registration record of 16,576 units. The Volkswagen ID.4 trailed behind with a total registration of 11,009 units.
Denmark
Tesla had the highest registrations and market share in Denmark in 2023, as per the data tracked by EU-EVs. The Musk-led company reportedly had a market share of 34.5%, overthrowing Volkswagen’s 10.5% share.
Of course, the Tesla Model Y beat all other models with a total registration of 17,975 units. The Tesla Model 3 followed with 4,216 unit registrations. Overall, the American automaker’s sales in Denmark reached 22,366 units in 2023. It represents a significant portion of the country’s total EV registrations of 64,781 units.
Apart from Tesla’s success in the abovementioned European markets last year, the Musk-led company also reached its self-set sales target of 1.8 million EV sales in 2023. This remarkable feat is largely due to the brand’s substantial market share leads in the US and Europe. Despite falling short behind Chinese rival BYD’s 2023 figures, Tesla remains the industry leader in the all-electric vehicle industry. It would be interesting to see how the American brand will compete in Europe this new year, especially with the recent arrival of the Cybertruck and the revamped Tesla Model 3 Highland.
