Tesla is expected to open its biggest supercharging site in Australia in January next year, with 12 of the manufacturer’s V3 Supercharging stalls being installed in the inner-eastern Melbourne suburb of Box Hill, as per The Driven.
Tesla’s supercharger site in Australia
At present, works are ongoing to get it operational just after the new year, and sources say that the site would feature 12 V3 stalls, which makes it the biggest Tesla supercharger site in Australia and the largest electric vehicle charging complex of any kind in this country.
It is good news for Tesla drivers in Australia, given the significant increase in Tesla numbers in the country in 2022, specifically following the popular Model Y crossover’s arrival in August.
Notably, the previous biggest Tesla supercharger site is in Macquarie Park in Sydney, which has ten V2 stalls.
Furthermore, Victoria has 15 active Tesla supercharger sites, so the Box Hill site would increase that up to 16 sites with a combined 84 charging stalls by early next year.
Meanwhile, the last major supercharging site to open in the state was Mornington Peninsula in Mornington in December 2021. This featured six V3 stalls and is part of the HomeCo.
17,238 Tesla delivered to Australian customers
Since then, more than 17,238 Teslas have been delivered to Australian consumers. That is almost 50% more Teslas delivered this year compared to 2021.
However, it is unclear if any of the newest sites would include the upcoming V4 superchargers, which could reportedly charge up to 350 kW of speeds. The first site started construction in the US state of Arizona with 40 stalls in September 2022. The current V3 superchargers are limited to 250 kW.
Australia’s EV uptake hit 4.7% in November
EV uptake in Australia reached 4.7% last month and is anticipated to do better this month. Tesla EVs make up a significant proportion of it, so more DC fast charging infrastructure, such as the Tesla superchargers, is needed to keep up.
Tesla plans for 50 new sites in Australia
In addition to the good news, including the Box Hill supercharger, the company has 50 new sites planned for Australia in the next 18 months.
Many of these are part of the NSW government’s charging initiative. 36 of the 50 sites are set in NSW, and few of these would have up to 15 stalls and be open to all-electric vehicles.
