Leading American automaker Tesla proudly announced Friday the successful production of its ten millionth 4680-type cylindrical battery cells at Gigafactory Texas.
The Musk-led company shared an image of the production team on its official Twitter account.
“Produced our 10 millionth 4680 cells at Giga Texas this week!”

In retrospect, Tesla first introduced the 4680 battery cell format at the company’s Battery Day in 2020. It claimed that the innovative battery could cut costs by more than 50%. Since then, the company has attempted to ramp up its production but was impeded by some bottlenecks.
How many Model Ys can the 10 million 4680 cells support?
Tesla currently utilizes the 4680-type batteries in a single version of the Giga Texas-made Tesla Model Y (AWD), with plans to also equip other models such as the Cybertruck. However, that would be dependent on the cell’s availability.
In essence, Tesla’s cumulative production of 10 million 4680-type battery cells is sufficient to produce approximately 12,000 Model Ys.
It is worth noting that the given figure is actually just the company’s total production so far, not the current output. Nonetheless, it remains significant progress, given that Tesla has not been manufacturing battery cells in Texas for long.
For context, Tesla currently manufactures its innovative 4680-type battery cells at the Kato road pilot facility and the Giga Texas.
Notably, Giga Texas’ car production has significantly relied on the pilot battery factory in Fremont for cell supplies. It would likely change now, considering the significant production progress of the 4680-type battery cells at Giga Texas.
Apart from the battery production plants in California and Texas, Tesla also aims to expand its Gigafactory Nevada for its 4680 cells.

This major production milestone is undoubtedly a good sign for Tesla’s electric car production ramp-up, which significantly relies on the new 4680-type battery cell.
All that said, it would not be surprising if Tesla soon advanced as a major player in battery cell production, given its current production initiatives.
