The second annual US Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Public Charging Study by JD Power revealed that Tesla’s Supercharger and Destination Charger networks top against all rivals, according to InsideEVs.

Charging infrastructures have become abundant due to the sudden shift to electric vehicles. However, many EV owners are dissatisfied with the existing public charging stations, which decline yearly, as claimed by JD Power. Some of the main concerns of EV owners are the shortage of charging stations and their inoperability.

In comparison, Tesla EV owners seem satisfied with the Supercharger network as it has excellent reliability and widespread locations.

JD Power Brent Gruber, Executive director of global automotive, stated, “Public charging continues to provide challenges to overall EV adoption and current EV owners alike. Not only is the availability of public charging still an obstacle, but EV owners continue to be faced with charging station equipment that is inoperable.”

The electric vehicle owners’ satisfaction is measured by JD Power Study based on the ten factors: Ease of charging, Speed of charging, Cost of charging, Ease of payment, Ease of finding this location, Convenience of this location, Things to do while charging, How safe you feel at this location, availability of chargers and Physical condition of the charging location.

JD Power EV Public Charging Study revealed that among all public Level 2 charging stations in the US, Tesla’s Level 2 Destination chargers ranked first. Furthermore, on a scale of 1 to 1,000, Tesla Destination scored 680, followed by Volta at 667 points and ChargePoint at 639. The segment average is only 633.

On the other hand, Tesla’s Supercharger network also topped the list with a rating of 739 out of 1,000. Tesla’s high score significantly increased the average score for DC fast chargers, which is currently 674. Tesla’s high score greatly increased the average score for DC fast chargers, which is currently 674. Notably, ChargePoint scored 644, and Electrify America scored 614, both of which are below the segment average for all brands.

According to JD Power, most EV owners are satisfied with the ease of charging at both Level 2 and DC fast charging stations. The other nine categories, on the other hand, lowered the overall ratings.

“Public charging infrastructure is a key component in the overall adoption of electric vehicles by the broad population,” Brent Gruber said in a press release. “Unfortunately, the availability of public charging is the least satisfying aspect of owning an EV. Owners are reasonably happy in situations where public charging is free, doesn’t require a wait and the location offers other things to do – but that represents a best-case scenario.”

Operability and maintenance of public charging were proven to be one of the main problems for EV users despite having more charging stations than before. Having said that, building additional EV charging infrastructure is one of the key points to addressing the ongoing problems faced by EV owners.
