Electric vehicle giant Tesla has just confirmed its ongoing development of a NACS to NACS extension cable to address the arising issues with different charge port locations of non-Tesla cars, according to the company’s official website.
What’s the issue?
Tesla has started welcoming early NACS adopters to its Supercharger network, which stimulated a new problem at electric vehicle charging stations.
For context, Tesla originally offered its enormous and reliable Supercharger network to its owners only. All Tesla EVs have their charge ports at the rear driver side, enabling easy connection to the Superchargers.
However, numerous non-Tesla EVs have their charge ports at different locations, making it challenging for the cable to reach them. In that sense, the owners had to park diagonally to plug in their EVs. As a result, they block other charging stalls that other drivers could have used at the time.
Tesla’s solution
Tesla is encouraging its NACS adopters, including Ford drivers, to park their EVs halfway onto the next charger stall to plug in. However, it must be noted that the Musk-led company dissuades owners from parking diagonally to ensure their availability for other customers.
Tesla is also recommending OEMs in North America to standardize their vehicles’ charge port locations either to the rear driver side or front passenger side.
“Most Supercharger cables at NACS Supercharger sites should be able to reach your EV charge port, however, in some cases you might have to park over the line in order to charge comfortably. Avoid parking diagonally to reach the cable and try to obstruct as few charge posts as possible. Charge port locations vary by EV model, which requires cable sharing between adjacent stalls at many sites. Tesla is rapidly deploying our latest V4 Supercharger post which reaches all EVs in the same Supercharger stall. Additionally, we encourage all vehicle manufacturers to standardize charge port locations to the rear driver side or front passenger side.”

In addition, the American electric vehicle giant is also currently developing a NACS to NACS extension cable to immediately address the above-mentioned issue.
“We are working on an NACS to NACS extension cable, which will be available for purchase in the future.”

The upcoming NACS to NACS extension cable will be an extra Tesla item, on top of other adapters like the CCS1 to NACS and NACS to CCS1. Tesla has yet to announce the exact launch schedule of the planned cable, which can significantly ease Supercharging non-Tesla EVs.
