Electric automaker Tesla has now set its sights on the car rental business. The company is currently hiring a Program Manager in Business Development based in Austin, Texas.

Interestingly, the job advertisement’s details suggest that the Musk-led automaker plans to launch an in-house car rental service. In addition, it seems that the pilot program will primarily focus on collision centers in the state.

Job ad details

Per Tesla’s careers page post, the Program Manager will generally aid the company in launching the “Tesla Rental Program” in Texas under his/her leadership.

To be specific, the prospect must “Support the team on launching a small pilot in all Texas collision sites.”

For context, Tesla currently owns five collision centers, commonly known as body shops, in the following cities:

  • Houston – 2
  • San Antonio – 1
  • Austin – 1
  • Dallas – 1

Tesla is yet to clarify the scope of its pilot program. The job ad implies that Tesla will initiate the pilot program for customers at the collision center. However, it remains vague if Tesla will have a wider car rental program after the pilot succeeds.

While on vacation we had a rental @Tesla Model 3 from Hertz! I’m telling you, being able to scan a QR code and add the car to my Tesla app, have Phone key access and MY Entire PROFILE with all my settings come to that car was MAGIC! It must be noted that Tesla EVs are deployed as rental cars under Hertz. It currently operates a fleet of Tesla models at 100,000 units.

Car rentals must indeed be present at body shops or collision centers to aid customers who cannot use their EVs in the meantime.

Moreover, it would offer Tesla another source of profitability if it actually turned the pilot program into an official car rental business.
