Tesla, through one of its recruiters, confirmed on LinkedIn that the electric vehicle giant is now developing a new Crash Test Lab in Austin, Texas.

“Y’all asked for it. Tesla provided! Tesla is building a Crash Test Lab in Austin, TX! We are hiring Engineering Technicians to support the crash test lab.

If you know vehicle instrumentation, test set up, and test execution, I’d love to connect.”

Notably, the move is crucial for Tesla’s strategy to improve the safety of its EVs, which has long been one of the company’s outstanding qualities.

What’s the big deal?

Safety is only natural to come first when developing and producing a new vehicle. Over the years, Tesla has pleasantly surprised a lot of people in that regard.

Here’s what Green NCAP says about the Tesla Model 3! It Scores a 5-Star Green NCAP Rating

For context, its best-selling Model 3 has received numerous safety awards, including the following:

  • 5-star ratings across the board and the lowest injury probability ever tested by NHTSA
  • 5-star ratings from Euro NCAP (“new safety technology benchmark”)
  • 5-star ratings from the Australiasian NCAP

Since then, almost all Tesla EVs have obtained comparable top-notch safety ratings.

Actually, pretty much according to everyone.

As we all know, Tesla’s progress on EV active safety through its Autopilot and Full Self-Driving Beta has gained much attention, particularly from the media.

Interestingly, Tesla’s passive safety is apparently more remarkable, Elektrek reports.

According to the report, Tesla disclosed the process by which it gathers a staggering amount of data from actual crashes. Then, the automaker uses the gathered data to enhance the safety of its vehicles by taking advantage of the fact that they are highly linked.

The Tesla EV will be able to inform analysts about relevant details when it got involved in an accident, including the following:

  • where it was hit
  • how hard it was
  • how many individuals were in the vehicle
  • when the airbag was implemented, and much more

Tesla apparently plans to validate the results with its California crash test facility.

Now, the Musk-led automaker is constructing a new Crash Test Lab in Austin. As necessary, Tesla has also posted a job advertisement as it looks for suitable talent for the role “Engineering Technician, Passive Safety Crash Test Lab.“

“The Passive Safety Crash & Sled Test team is responsible for executing, analyzing, and reporting on crash and sled tests within required program timelines, primarily focusing on vehicle development, regulatory certification, and consumer protection crash testing. Team consists of Test Engineers and Engineering Technicians, specializing in Vehicle & Mechanical, Instrumentation & ATD (Anthropomorphic Test Devices, or crash test dummies), and Imaging.”
