Tesla announced plans to launch a nationwide tour for the Cybertruck in the world’s largest auto market, Reuters reports, citing Tesla China’s recent post on WeChat.
Tesla to show off the Cybertruck in Chinese showrooms
Tesla plans to display the Cybertruck in several showrooms in China, aiming to show off the all-electric pickup to its Chinese fans.
The American electric vehicle giant’s Chinese arm will start exhibiting the Cybertruck later this year. Interestingly, Tesla is enabling its local fans to determine the locations for the Cybertruck’s display.
Tesla and EV enthusiasts who hope to see the stainless steel pickup can submit the cities they prefer for the “tour” until March 31 only.
Unfortunately, the planned store display may be the only chance for China-based EV fans to see the Cybertruck in the country.
Will the Cybertruck be available in China?
As Chief Executive Elon Musk explained, launching the Cybertruck in the Chinese market will be “very difficuly.”
“Getting Cybertruck road legal in China would be very difficult, but we could ship some prototypes over for display.”
CEO Elon Musk responded in an X user’s post
For context, the enormous size and distinctive design of the Cybertruck made it hard for the Musk-led company to get the US regulators’ approval, despite Tesla’s efforts to develop the electric pickup truck specifically for the US market. Therefore, its launch to markets beyond North America is even more challenging due to varying safety regulations.
Purpose
Tesla China’s move to initiate a multi-city tour for the Cybertruck is highly likely a marketing strategy.
The Musk-led company is apparently trying to entice prospective customers to visit showrooms to increase the visibility of its other models. In effect, other available Tesla cars may attract their interest and lead them to consider buying one.
Currently, Tesla must continue ramping up the production of the Cybertruck to meet the growing demand for the all-new pickup truck.
