Tesla has started the Model Y deliveries to Taiwan, as reported by Teslarati. It marked the first time the company has shipped electric vehicles built at Giga Berlin outside of Europe.
That said, the automaker’s unusual move prompts questions among the EV community as to why Tesla chose Germany’s Gigafactory Berlin for Taiwan’s initial delivery instead of Tesla’s Shanghai factory.
Taiwan and China’s geopolitical tensions hamper Tesla deliveries
Import and export activity has suffered due to the geopolitical tensions between China and Taiwan. Both nations had imposed limitations, making Tesla’s delivery efforts to Taiwan difficult.
Consequently, Tesla had no choice but to source EVs from Giga Berlin instead of Giga Shanghai, which is only approximately 700 kilometers (434 miles) from Taiwan.
However, it must be noted that Tesla is not the only one affected by the import and export restrictions. Taiwan banned imports from China, including numerous kinds of vehicles.
According to the Taiwan Bureau of Foreign Trade’s list, Chinese sedans, other passenger cars, low-chassis buses, and vehicles with a capacity of more than ten individuals are now prohibited from entering the nation.
Tesla continued to be inventive despite these restrictions. As reported, the automaker still started delivering the Model Y to Taiwan despite undergoing a more complex process.
