Electric vehicle sales in the US market smashed records in 2022, indicating the start of a significant increase in demand for them. Since the beginning, Tesla has dominated the US market with its innovative and smart models. Despite a decline in Tesla’s share this year in the country, it still reportedly controls two-thirds of the market.
According to Electrek, Tesla vehicles made up 79% of all new electric vehicles registered in the US for the entire year of 2020. However, that percentage dropped to 69.95% in 2021.
In retrospect, we published an article just last month covering Tesla’s lead in the US electric vehicle sector. In the first six months of 2022, registrations of Tesla’s new vehicles increased to 61%, beating its veteran competitors, including BMW and Lexus, in the electric vehicle sector and overall sales.
We have also reported that the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 became two of California’s best-selling EVs in the first half of 2022. In fact, Tesla has 68% of the market for US all-electric vehicles, just like the previous year.
However, Tesla’s market share is reportedly declining in 2022. Nonetheless, Tesla still accounts for the majority of EV sales in the US. Precisely, Tesla currently controls around two-thirds of the EV market as of August, based on the most recent registration statistics from Experian.
Despite being in second and third position, Ford and Hyundai are still far behind Tesla, which continues to have four of the top five best-selling electric vehicles in the country:
1. Tesla Model Y: 134,978 units
2. Tesla Model 3: 123,634 units
3. Ford Mustang Mach-E: 25,596 units
4. Tesla Model S: 20,032 units
5. Tesla Model X: 19,739 units
6. Hyundai Ioniq 5: 16,929 units
7. Kia EV6: 15,612 units
8. Chevy Bolt EUV: 11,788 units
9. VW ID.4: 9,127 units
10. Nissan Leaf: 8,740 units
Due to Tesla’s enormous lead, other automakers may have difficulty overthrowing it. But it must also be noted that other electric vehicles are anticipated to have considerable short-term growth. For instance, Ford’s F-150 Lightning production is still gradually cranking up, while GM recently reported an increase in Bolt EV deliveries in Q4.
In the US, Tesla has established itself as the “face of electric cars.” Remarkably, its innovations and software updates for its models bring in additional customers.
Nevertheless, there is no doubt that the automaker will occupy the top spot in the market in the coming years.
