American automaker Tesla proudly showcased the Gigafactory Shanghai’s electric vehicle production prowess in China with a new 45-second video post on X by Tesla Manufacturing @gigafactories on Friday.
The video content primarily highlighted how automation aided Gigafactory Shanghai’s operations to achieve exceptional production cycle times.
Giga Shanghai’s production prowess
Tesla demonstrated the Giga Shanghai’s routinary operation in the 45-second video, including logistics, stamping, casting, body painting, and general assembly.
The caption also indicated that the Chinese production hub boasts 95% automation, enabling it to finish an entire electric vehicle in just 39.62 seconds.
This remarkable production prowess also enabled the Giga Shanghai to achieve its first million electric vehicle production in just 33 months on August 15, 2022. Even more, it hit its 2 million production milestone in only 13 months on September 6, 2023.
Production focus
Tesla, through its Chinese arm, currently manages the production of the popular Model Y crossover and revamped Model 3 Highland at the Giga Shanghai.
Reports from last month implied that Tesla ramped up production of the Tesla Model Y at the Giga Shanghai. The Musk-led company apparently aims to increase the Chinese production hub’s production capacity by twofold this new year.
Notably, Giga Shanghai supplies Tesla cars not only in the domestic market but also in the European and Middle Eastern markets.
Competition
Tesla’s continuous efforts to accelerate its production in Giga Shanghai are crucial for the American brand to regain its dominance over Chinese giant BYD.
In Q4 2023, Tesla reported 494,989 electric vehicle deliveries globally. However, BYD managed to beat the Musk-led company with its total EV deliveries of 526,40 units.
BYD’s feat against Tesla strongly demonstrates customers’ preference for cheaper models amid the soaring interest rates.
Nonetheless, Tesla remained unbeatable in terms of FY 2023 BEV sales performance with 1.84 million units. Meanwhile, BYD only delivered 1.6 million all-electric vehicles.
Excitingly, Tesla aims to introduce a revamped Model Y as early as this year, with mass production set by H2 2024. In addition, the Cybertruck is also expected to significantly boost Tesla’s sales and delivery figures this year and beyond.
