Tesla announced the concept car Roadster 2.0 long back, in the year of 2017. However, despite the prolonged wait, Tesla Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen recently implied that it would be worthwhile to wait for the all-electric supercar, Teslarati reported.

According to Teslarati, Franz von Holzhausen provided vital information regarding the upcoming Roadster during an interview with host Ryan McCaffrey for the Ride the Lightning podcast.

Tesla Chief Designer Franz von Holzhausen returns to my @Tesla podcast, Ride the Lightning, for an hour-long interview this Sunday at 9am ET/6am PT. We talked a LOT about Cybertruck, plus next-gen Roadster (!), the new steering wheel option on Model S & X, and more! pic.twitter.com/dtGW0Cwbw5

As stated, the car was unveiled in late 2017 alongside the Tesla Semi; however, production has not yet begun. In contrast, the Tesla Semi started shipping at the beginning of December 2022.

The Chief Designer pointed out, Tesla is now concentrating on producing electric vehicles in large quantities. Hence, vehicles manufactured in small numbers, like the Roadster 2.0, are not in priority for the time being. Despite this, von Holzhausen claimed that Tesla is working on the car. When it is ready for production, it could outperform the supercar that debuted in 2017 in every way.

We’re developing the car. I think you know we have priorities as a company, and the priorities are mass electrification. And Roadster is not a mass product. So unfortunately, you know it takes its kind of position, but we are working on it in earnest. And I think the time we’ve taken has enabled us to improve on basically every metric we set out to establish when we first debuted that (car)

Tesla Roadster 2.0, similar to Tesla Model S Plaid

Regarding the performance of the Roadster 2.0, the Chief Designer pointed out that projecting the performance and usability of a Model S Plaid would likely present a good notion of just how capable the all-electric supercar could be.

Additionally, this is a valid criticism because, aside from its 620-mile range and 250+ mph top speed, the Model S Plaid has matched several of the general specifications of the Roadster 2.0 prototype.

I think if you can just extrapolate the performance and the usability of a Plaid Model S, and you can imagine where that could go, then I think your imagination takes you where we’re headed as well, in the capability and how much better the Roadster will be and the weight will be absolutely worth it. If you think about it, a Plaid Model S, it basically hits all the metrics that we said the Roadster could do, which seemed impossible for a car at that time. So imagine. Let your imagination run a little bit

Franz von Holzhausen, Tesla’s Chief Designer.

It is interesting to note what the Tesla Chief Designer had to say regarding the weight and power of the Roadster. This is because the Model S Plaid’s full potential has yet to be realized, even in its present form. A supercar capable of outperforming the competition could be created by packing the unlocked version of the Model S’s powertrain into a smaller, lighter package.
