Two years late of the initial plan of late 2021, Tesla is now apparently preparing to begin Cybertruck mass production by the end of 2023. According to Reuters, the news is obtained from two trusted sources aware of the plans.
However, other relevant information has not been disclosed yet.
Low-volume production to begin in mid-2023
InsideEVs reported that Tesla is gearing up the Giga Texas to produce the new electric truck, with “early production” planned to begin in mid-2023, as per the company’s announcement on the Q3 2022 earnings call.
Furthermore, CEO Elon Musk stated that the firm is “in the final lap for Cybertruck,” and Cybertruck’s manufacturing status was classified as “tooling” in the Q3 2022 Shareholder Deck.
It is also worth noting that the IDRA Group announced last week on LinkedIn that the Giga press machine was packed and prepared for shipping.
Notably, all of these indicators seem to imply that low-volume production will begin in mid-2023. However, it is still unclear if Tesla can scale up to large-scale production before the end of 2022.
As per the report, Tesla would not record revenue for a full quarter of production on a model considered crucial to its growth until early 2024. That is if its manufacturing is ramped up gradually in the second half of next year to maximum capacity.
In addition, it would entail a delay of at least another year before deliveries began for the million or so people who had made reservations.
Tesla Cybertruck delays
Tesla has delayed the target date for initial production three times since the Cybertruck prototype was shown in late 2019. It was “from late 2021 to late 2022, then to early 2023, and most recently to the mid-2023 target for initial production.”
