Electric automaker Tesla enjoyed solid growth in its EV sales last month in the world’s largest auto market. Notably, the figures are relatively close to record levels in many areas.
Tesla had its second-highest record in March 2023
China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) revealed that Tesla’s overall wholesale of MIC Model 3 and Model Y shipments, which incorporate exports and local retail sales, reached 88,869 units in March. That figure represents a 35% sales growth over a year ago and marks the automaker’s second-highest record in history.
In hindsight, Tesla’s highest record in total EV volume was in November last year, with 100,291 units.
On the other hand, Tesla’s total volume reached 229,322 MIC EVs in Q1 2023. That figure represents a nearly 26% increase from a year ago and a new quarterly record. (Q4 2022 was 227,791).
Retail sales in China in March
CPCA’s data indicated that Tesla’s local sales in China in March reached 76,663 MIC EVs. Notably, that figure represented a 17% growth over a year ago.
On the other hand, the EV giant has reported sales of over 137,000 MIC EVs this year to date. It indicates a 27% sales growth over a year ago.
All that considered, Tesla showed no indications of a downshift in its EV sales in China.
CnEVPost also reported that Tesla held 20% of the Chinese battery electric vehicle market last month. The achievement marks the automaker’s highest record in 2 years and an increase from just 11.5% market share a month ago.
Export – March
Tesla reportedly exported 12,206 MIC EVs. That figure represents a significant growth from 0 in 2022 due to COVID-19 lockdowns.
It is worth noting that the automaker Tesla typically ships the most vehicles in the first month of the quarter. Then, it will be followed by a sizable number of vehicles in the second month of the quarter.
It is also interesting to note that exports rose to approximately 92,000 units in the first quarter of the year, up 24% from the same period the previous year.
Tesla EV models
Tesla manufactures two MIC models in its Gigafactory Shanghai, the Model 3 and Model Y. Both models have different variants.
Tesla Model 3 wholesale sales in March totaled 27,202. Meanwhile, Tesla Model Y wholesale sales totaled 61,667.
Tesla Model 3 reported retail sales of 21,726 (down 16.5% YoY). Meanwhile, Tesla Model Y had 54,937 units (up 38% YoY). Obviously, Tesla Model Y sells far more than Model 3 by a substantial margin.
