Tesla has recently increased tooling at Giga Texas to create its 4680 battery cells. Last week, it received and installed big, heavy-duty presses provided by Sacmi in the facility’s cathode building.

According to papers discovered by @greggertruck last October, the American EV manufacturer received a shipment from Italy. Sacmi, a manufacturer of heavy-duty industrial equipment, created the packages.

It weighed 334,000 lbs, leading @greggertruck to presume it was for Cybertruck manufacture. On the other hand, aerial photographs acquired by drone pilot Joe Tegtmeyer revealed that the equipment from Italy was brought last week to Giga Texas’s cathode facility, which is still in construction.

I got an on-the-ground image of that Sacmi Imola press being set up in battery cathode structure. How bout that? You can see the second already placed! Was told these are 3x the size $tsla needed! They'll grow into them.. These are pivotal for new dry cathode 4680 production 🚨 pic.twitter.com/KoE9E9OKJQ

300 metric tons of equipment

According to Drive Tesla Canada, One of the contractors who assisted with bringing the equipment into the cathode building and installing them shared images with Drive Tesla, demonstrating their size.

The worker said that each piece weighs 300 metric tons, which is three times the size of what Tesla required, but they bought it because it was the only one accessible, and waiting for anything that better suited their size needs would have taken too long.

Since the Sacmi gear was transported to Tesla’s cathode facility, it is safe to presume that these machines will be utilized to manufacture 4680 battery cells.

More massive equipment coming

The Italian company’s website focuses on lithium-ion battery powder treatment solutions for cathode and anode materials.

This is only the beginning of the cathode building’s equipment installation.

There will likely be more shipments to the cathode building in the coming weeks, according to a Tesla engineer who said that the structure’s interior would be so packed with battery production machinery that “you won’t be able to walk” comfortably.
