Tesla has just initiated another safety recall on almost 12,000 Cybertruck electric pickups due to a windshield wiper motor issue despite only being out for over six months.
Issue
According to the Part 573 Safety Recall Report, all Cybertrucks Tesla has produced so far are plagued with a defect on the windshield wiper motor.
The issue is no longer surprising, considering that Tesla Cybertruck features the largest wiper compared to any other consumer vehicle.
“On affected vehicles, the front windshield wiper motor controller may stop functioning due to electrical overstress to the gate driver component.”
NHTSA
The problem in the Cybertruck’s front windshield wiper motor controller may increase the risk of a crash as it may “reduce visibility in certain operating conditions.”
Coverage
The latest safety recall includes all Tesla Cybetrucks produced from November 13, 2023, to June 6, 2024, which is basically all of the produced units so far.
The number of potentially involved Cybertrucks is 11,688 units, while the estimated percentage with the defect is 2%.
Remedy
Tesla Cybertruck owners will receive notifications about the safety recall starting on August 8, 2024.
The EV giant notified all authorized stores and service centers about the recall by around June 21, 2024.
To fix the issue, Tesla plans to replace the defective windshield wiper motors with a new one that has a “properly functioning gate driver component” at no cost to Cybertruck owners.
In hindsight, Tesla initiated the first safety recall of the Cybertruck in April over the accelerator pad issue. Such early defects can tarnish not only the build quality of Cybertruck but also Tesla’s reputation. Fortunately, Tesla has not yet received any reports of collisions, injuries, or deaths associated with the latest issue.
