Leading American automaker Tesla reported record highs in production and deliveries in Q4 2022. However, its expansion rate decelerated recently, as per InsideEVs.

Results Q4 2022: Production & Delivery

A new quarterly record was set by Tesla in Q4 when its total global EV production rose approximately 44% year-on-year to 439,701 units.

Remarkably, the Model 3/Model Y accounts for the majority, with a 43% growth to a record of 419,088 sales.

The production of the Model S and Model X has also enjoyed a new high since Q4 2018 to 20,614 units, up 57%.

Tesla’s global customer delivery saw a YoY growth of 31% to a record-breaking 405,278 units.

Meanwhile, the Model 3/Model Y delivery saw a YoY growth of 31% to 388,131 units. The Tesla Model S/Model X enjoyed a YoY increase of 46% to 17,147 units.

It should be emphasized that output was substantially higher than delivery by 34,423 units. According to Tesla, the current state of their novel strategy results in more cars being shipped:

“We continued to transition towards a more even regional mix of vehicle builds which again led to a further increase in cars in transit at the end of the quarter.”

Tesla’s EV production saw a YoY increase of 47% to 1,369,611 units, while its delivery enjoyed a YoY growth of 40% to 1,313,851 units.

The growth rate is less than the desired average yearly growth over the long term. Nevertheless, these figures still represent new yearly highs for Tesla. The following years would need to be higher than 50% to achieve its target.

Notably, there is a 55,760-unit disparity between Tesla’s production and delivery results. According to Troy Teslike, Tesla’s stockpile might be 71,000 units or 13 days’ worth of supply at the year’s end.

It must also be noted that the Tesla Semi electric truck was not included in the reported figures, despite a few deliveries in December.

Tesla's inventory at the end of Q4 was 71K or 13 days of supply based on my calculation.

In 2022, there was an all-time peak in Model 3/Model Y car production and deliveries. Essentially, Tesla produced a record-breaking 1,298,434 units and delivered 1,247,146 units. It is worth noting that the BEV sector has never seen peaks like these.

Meanwhile, Model S/Model X’s results seem realistic, given the increased production of the redesigned models of Tesla’s flagship vehicles.

YTD 2022 (YOY change):

  • Total production: 1,369,611 (up 47%)
    • Model 3/Y production: 1,298,434 (up 43%)

Tesla has delivered over 3.6 million EVs cumulatively, while its latest four-quarters performance recorded production and delivery of over 1.3 million. Since 2022 has been challenging, it is not surprising that Tesla has fallen short of expectations for the year.

Nonetheless, there is more than enough time for the automaker to rebound in 2023.
